A History of 14 Market Street

132 years of Shoes

In 1869 14 Market Street was a shoe shop owned by William Wright, a Quaker, and Guardian or Overseer of the Poor Fund. William died in 1909 and his daughter Hannah Wright carried on the business until the mid 1920's.

Mr and Mrs Leighton and their son Malcolm, from Kendal, then took over the shop. In 1928 Mr Leighton died. Malcolm and his wife Annie continued to run the shop until 1972.

George and Pauline Hill took over in 1972. They retired in 2001, sadly bringing to an end over 132 years of selling and repairing shoes.

However, thanks to the generosity of George, Pauline and many helpers, 14 Market St continues to be an important part of Whaley Bridge.
